Where Do We Fit?

I appreciate the work that others are doing to express their journey into the heart of God. Understanding our Father’s heart in the feet-to-the-ground matters of life might be a little like reading braille. You’re reaching for the book… is that a book you feel? Yes! Now what does it say? Did I read that right?

I feel like I can relate with Jeff McQ’s Re-Learning My Spirituality. Having lived a form of spirituality that left me empty I’m working to re-discover what it means to be Christian.

I just sat in another staff meeting–a meeting where the staff knows I’m not attending church–and felt like an outsider. It was a little comical. They’re talking about how great church was on Sunday, how wonderful it was to participate together in that way, and I’m the odd man out. I wasn’t there Sunday. Awkward!

What Jeff–the other Jeff–said is more than semantics. I too believe we can know God intimately.

What I needed was not to practice religion, but to re-learn my spirituality. I needed to know how to talk to God as a trusted Friend, a faithful Father, the Lover of my soul. Relationship, not routines.

I am seeking to understand how that last statement–”Relationship, not routines”–works in the real world. How can I live that out around people who see the kingdom of God in a different way? Can I participate in body life while living outside of the Sunday paradigm? I’m wrestling to understand how to people who see Sunday morning as the bread-and-butter weekly manifestation of body life.

While we may not have the kind of answers we think we require, we can place ourselves in our Father’s hands and trust him for the future. That’s about all I’ve got right now.
